I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, but developed an extreme dislike for farming. Crawling under a press drill to repack discs wasn’t exactly a teenagers idea of fun. Couple with that, riding around on the back of a mix mill in -40°C every weekend in the winter, I was determined to do something else other than farming. I went to University for CompSci, eventually landed in a government job for 21 years. Took unpaid leave, retrained and became a quality control inspector. Resigned from my government job at 48. Figured if the inspection gig didn’t work, I would find something else. I wasn’t going back to the bureaucracy. Picked up my first countertop hydroponics unit in late 2019. I now really like growing stuff, plants and edible mushrooms. My father tells me, I’m not a farmer, to which I respond, you’re right, I’m a gardener.
