Pests- Aphids

Hi @jan ,

I’m afraid your garden is heavily infested with Aphids. And that is probably the main problem why some of the seedlings of chives have died back, even as the germination rate has been quite decent.

Please follow the guidelines above on how to control aphids in your indoor garden.

If you have more questions, don’t hesitate to ask.

All 9 plants I started with at Christmas are doing well except for one of the basils. One of them is great but the one is stunted and has now gone very limp, its leaves starting to drop off. Why is this? It seems rather wet and just seems to be rotting. Very disappointing as I have 3 lovely lettuces, 3 promising tomato plants and one very healthy basil. I’m not convinced the third basil is thriving as it should be either

Hi, thanks for sharing!

A few things come to my mind when looking at the picture you provided. How is the tank filled? If overwatered some plants may rot and die back prematurely.
I also noticed some (possibly sticky) transparent drops on the garden lid that usually relate to aphid infestation and when I looked more carefully, I think I may have found one aphid on the plant on the right. Please give it a closer look and make sure you don’t have any pests there, hiding under the leaves.

I think you’ve got it! Would I use an insecticide like I’d use outside?
Any idea why this has happened? Have these things come from another plant on the window sill?

I would not use the insecticide that is applied outdoors in indoor conditions, check the label and user manual before you do anything. Usually, most products are for outdoor use only- and for a good reason.

If it’s just a few aphids they haven’t formed a steady colony yet- aphids can be washed off under running water and/or removed by hand.

It takes just one aphid to start a colony, and they don’t come in just through the window. They also come with fresh produce or on clothes or hair.

Can the Ethanol spray be used on lettuce, tomato, thyme, and basil?

@LoveToGarden not sure if that will work, but if you want to go for something different… I had some luck with really, really, REALLLLLLLLY strong black tea. that stuff looked more like coffee, but spraying my outside plants worked fine with that stuff. For my indoor garden i usually go with carefully rinsing the plants and making sure i rinse both sides of the leaves with running fresh water.
