Holes to avoid root binding

HI guys, I’m a newbie here and on my first attempt at growing I noticed that while the smart soil is well fed and watered, at least with the plants I planted, tomato, basil, lettuce. I also noticed that the pods seem to lack enough real estate/volume for the roots to grow and they bind quite quickly, thus limiting it’s longevity and growth. Has anyone tried making small holes at the bottom in the fashion of “air pruning technique”? Here is a (https://www.springpot.com/blog/air-pruning-in-fabric-pots/)
I"m wondering if the roots left in the pot will absorb the nutrients properly and the ones outside will be in charge of getting more oxygen preventing root rot and binding.

thanks
