Kale keeps dying

I made multiple attempts at growing kale in my Smart Garden 9. When it has four leaves it withers and dies. I have no problem growing lettuce, basil and spinach. I gave up for the summer while I grow kale outdoors, but would like to try again in the fall if I can figure out how to keep it alive. Suggestions?

Hello Alanna,

Kale can be a bit more sensitive indoors than lettuce, basil, or spinach, especially in the early stages. It grows best at 18–24 °C (64–75 °F), ideally around 22 °C (72 °F). If it’s too warm, it may age faster and wither early.

Make sure the lamp is at the right height so young leaves don’t get scorched, and harvest regularly once it’s producing — kale’s best yields are within about 30 days of sprouting indoors. Starting fresh in the fall with stable temperatures should give you much better results.

I’d love to hear how it goes!
